Indian Red Cross Society, Rajkot

The Indian Red Cross Society, Rajkot, has been serving the community since its establishment in 1923. We are a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering, promoting health and safety, and supporting communities in times of crisis.

Red Cross at a Glance

The Red Cross Movement was born in Geneva in 1864 following the vision of Jean Henry Dunant, who, moved by the plight of wounded soldiers in the Battle of Solferino, advocated for a neutral humanitarian organization to aid victims of war and disasters. The emblem—a red cross on a white background—is a reversal of the Swiss flag, honoring its origin.

In India, the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) was established in 1920 under Act XV of Parliament, working in partnership with the Government of India, UN agencies, and international Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations. Today, it operates through 35 State/UT branches and over 780 district branches.

The mission of the Red Cross is to inspire and initiate humanitarian activities that alleviate human suffering, promote health and dignity, and foster peace.

The Indian Red Cross Society collaborates with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the St. John Ambulance Association, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), multinational corporations, individuals, and other partners to support its humanitarian activities.

Indian Red Cross Society is a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Our Guiding Principles

The Indian Red Cross Society adheres to the seven fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement:

  • Humanity: Protecting life and health, alleviating suffering wherever it is found, and fostering peace.

  • Impartiality: Providing aid without discrimination, prioritizing the most urgent needs.

  • Neutrality: Remaining independent of political, racial, religious, or ideological controversies.

  • Independence: Maintaining autonomy while cooperating with governments and agencies.

  • Voluntary Service: Driven by volunteers, not for profit or promotion.

  • Unity: Only one recognized Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in each country.

  • Universality: All societies have equal status and share duties in a global network.

The Red Cross Emblem

The red cross on white is internationally recognized for medical and humanitarian relief. Alternatives like the red crescent and red crystal are also accepted emblems within the Movement. Use of these symbols is strictly regulated; unauthorized use is prohibited by law.
